The Story:
In the half-light of her studio, Lila stood before the canvas titled ART 101, brush still wet with crimson and gold. The poem she had painted across its surface stared back at her. Bold strokes declaring a march to beauty’s heights, a dance with angels at life’s edge, kisses without shame or regret. For weeks she had carried the words like a secret heartbeat, letting them guide her hand until the painting felt alive.
She was thirty-two, a teacher by day, painter by night, and lately both felt like holding her breath. The classroom was safe: lesson plans, raised hands, predictable endings. The studio was dangerous: silence, doubt, the fear that every stroke might prove she had nothing new to say. Tonight, though, the painting refused to let her hide.
Lila set the brush down and stepped closer. The colors swirled, blues bleeding into fire, black fracturing into light, like a map of every doubt she had ever swallowed. She read the poem aloud, voice unsteady at first, then stronger.
“Off to the heights of beauty… We march... our heads on high… Without a doubt… Worried thought or care.”
The words felt like permission.
She thought of the boy in third period who never spoke, but whose eyes followed every line she drew on the board. She thought of her mother, who had died too young and left behind a box of unfinished sketches. She thought of herself at twenty, certain the world would one day applaud her courage, and at thirty, certain it never would.
The painting didn’t judge her. It simply asked her to keep going.
Lila picked up a fresh canvas, smaller this time, and began again, not to prove anything, not to win anything, but because the march felt good under her feet. She painted the edge of life as a place of color and motion, where death was not an ending but a doorway angels used to dance. She painted kisses that carried no weight of regret, only the warmth of being fully here.
When dawn arrived, the new canvas was unfinished, but alive. Lila stepped back, hands streaked with paint, and smiled, not the careful smile she wore in the classroom, but the unguarded one she had almost forgotten.
She didn’t need the world to applaud. She only needed to keep marching. Head high. Heart open. No battles left to fight with herself.
And somewhere in the wet paint, the poem whispered its quiet agreement:
We go—without a doubt.

The poem celebrates heads held high, hearts free of shame, kisses tender without regret, and a fearless dance where angels meet us at death’s boundary, legs in the air, worries shed.
