Inside the Calm

The poem is built on paired lines: surge / still, towers / will, street / dawn, fire / calm. Outside is noise, glass, mist, and a crowd that behaves like weather. Inside is a single will that does not argue with the street — it simply is not defeated by it. The figure does not flee the city. He walks the shining street through it, toward a golden dawn that has not yet arrived. The last line is the title made flesh: calm is not the absence of fire. It is a place one can stand inside while the city still moves.

The painting says the same thing in architecture. A lone figure recedes down a wet, ruled street. Crowds mass on both flanks like a current. Towers smear into mist and amber. A central spire holds the gold. Vertical scrapes and reflected geometry keep the street exact even as the upper city dissolves.
